[[Defense]] is a core [[combat]] [[Skills|skill]] that helps reduce the chance of being hit by any type of attack—[[Strength|melee]], [[Range]], or [[Magic]]. It works alongside the defensive bonuses provided by your equipped [[equipment]] to determine whether incoming attacks land or miss entirely.

During combat, your Defense level combines with the defensive stats of your equipped gear to determine how likely you are to block incoming damage. This applies to all forms of combat—[[Strength|melee]], [[Range]], and [[Magic]]—and is effective in both PvP and PvE scenarios.

In general, training Defense helps reduce how often you're hit, no matter the attack style. While certain gear bonuses may affect your vulnerability to specific types of damage (as explained in the combat triangle part of the [[Combat#Combat_Triangle|Combat]] page), your core Defense level always plays a critical role. Because of this, most players choose to level Defense alongside their offensive stats to improve survivability and reduce how much [[food]] they consume in combat.
