HighSpell (originally titled CarbonOdyssey[1]) is a free-to-play, browser-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed entirely by a single developer, Dew. It is a third-person, point-and-click fantasy adventure set in a medieval world, heavily inspired by classic games such as RuneScape Classic and RuneScape 2.[2]

The game is built with 3D environments and 2D sprites, replicating the look and feel of early 2000s browser-based MMOs while introducing quality-of-life improvements and modern design sensibilities. There is no client download—HighSpell runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript and WebGL.

Dew is solely responsible for the game's programming, art, design, balance, and content updates. He remains actively involved in development and some community engagement through the HighSpell Discord and the official subreddit.

History and Development edit

HighSpell began development around 2018-2019 under the original name CarbonOdyssey. The early version featured a Greco-Roman inspired theme, but this was eventually dropped in favor of a more traditional medieval fantasy setting. The name was changed to HighSpell for clarity, branding, and to match the newly purchased domain name, HighSpell.com.

"Originally I was going for a more 'ancient Greece' type theme, but during development I decided on a more medieval fantasy theme... mainly because I prefer it a bit more."

Dew was inspired by the shutdown of RuneScape Classic and began creating a game in its spirit. While the graphics style mimics RSC, the gameplay borrows more heavily from RuneScape 2, with a familiar but modernized skill-based progression system. Dew works on the game while maintaining a full-time job, often committing 20-30 hours per week during off-hours.

After years of development, the game entered public beta on April 20, 2021.[3] Players could register and play directly through their browser. Since then, Dew has continued to release regular updates, new content, and gameplay improvements.
